Student stories

Our current Cheney PhD scholarship students are exploring a number of health challenges, from muscle health and viral infections to dementia and autoimmune disease.

Leeds being a structural biology hub of the north was very appealing, it just made sense to do my PhD here.

Monika Olejnik, exploring how drugs improve muscle health.

It’s a really flexible programme compared to other PhDs. It exposes you to very different techniques and perspectives, and different ways of doing things.

Jake Browne, researching how viruses lead to kidney transplant failure.

I knew what I wanted to do technically, and what skills I wanted to learn, but this programme has given me a chance to step back and actually explore different areas in more detail.

Tom Mitchell, developing tools to monitor and understand Dementia.

It’s been helpful to be able to go through it together as a cohort, to get advice and learn from each other as we go along.

Kate Adamson, investigating immune receptors in relation to rheumatoid arthritis
