The VC Jordan / PR Radford Prize
The VC Jordan/PR Radford Prize will be awarded annually to the best PhD student thesis in the Astbury Centre. This annual prize of £500 has been generously donated by Leeds alumnus Professor Craig Jordan.
Craig Jordan, CMG, OBE, PhD, DSc, FMedSci (pictured below left circa 1971) is a scientist specializing in the development of small molecule therapies for breast cancer. Currently, he is Professor of Breast Medical Oncology, and Professor of Molecular and Cellular Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Centre, Houston, Texas. Previously, he was Scientific Director and Vice Chairman of Oncology at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Centre of Georgetown University. Jordan was the first to discover the therapeutic properties of tamoxifen and the scientific principles for adjuvant therapy with antihormones.
Craig Jordan attended Moseley Hall Grammar School where he was taught by PR Radford (pictured below right, circa 1960), the Head of Chemistry whom he credits greatly for instilling a love for chemistry as a school boy and for giving him the confidence to progress to Higher Education. He was later awarded a scholarship to study at the University of Leeds where he received BSc, PhD and DSc degrees in Pharmacology. It is Craig's wish that this award should be co-named with PR Radford, as a tribute to his guidance and influence.
